I was wondering if it is possible to assign a contract for a house that is in the forclosure process. I know it is done for pre-foreclosures.

You have to check with the foreclosing bank. In my experience, none of their contracts allow for assignment of these properties.

I agree with paul. I have done the same but it was not a SS and my buyers just paid the "payoff amount"
I take it this will be your first time talking to a potential seller. Approach with confidence, build rapport before you go into your pitch, see if they are selling and if the price makes sense, buy it.
