Vinyl Or Wood Clad Replacement Windows?

Can anybody give me the scoop on these for replacement in my own home? I've been reading on the web that vinyl is the way to go and the quality has come far in recent years but some people I talked to claim wood clad is the only way to go. Nobody can give me a clear answer as to why one is better than the other. I'll be installing myself and vinyl prices are much lower which is why have to know if vinyl's quality and insulating properties are as good as they're supposed to be. All help is appreciated.

Wood clad is the high end window product. With the beauty and versitility comes the trade off of more maintenance. Vinyl is cheaper, it looks cheaper on an expensive home, the maintenance is lower. If you are looking at vinyl windows that you like the apperance of then you don't need to look to wood. All windows regardless of what they are made of need to be compared using the Fenestration Rating label.

Do a search online for Fenestration Rating and read up on what the label can tell you about a window. You also have to understand that different parts of the country have code requirements in regard to windows and heat loss. This has nothing to do with wood or vinyl it is in the label.

Trying to pick out windows only based on what they are made out of is like trying to buy a house based on the color it is painted.
