I believe it is standard operating procedure when incorporation papers are done that the corp's proposed name is checked to make sure its name is "unique" in its state of incorporation. Registering a trademark (like a logo design) may not be necessary but may be advisable depending on what you choose and how important it is to make sure nobody else can use that design.
When I formed my RE brokerage corp, I didn't register my logo because I could be flexible in terms of what I use on my stationery and cards. It wasn't a big deal to me to lock up the design.
