To Get RE License Or Not?
I know that this question has probably been asked many times before, but I can't seem to find this topic here. I was wondering what the advantages and disvantages are of holding RE license. I would not be selling other people's properties, only my own.
Thanks.
Anybody got an opinion on this???
Thanks.
As a Realtor, you have this pesky problem called ethics.
Please know that I'm not accusing anyone here of shady practices! What I mean is, there are things we can't do, because as a real estate professional we "should have known better." We are prohibited from unjustly enriching ourselves at the expense of others.
That said, it's great having full MLS access, getting a 3% discount (basically) on retail properties, and most importantly, finding out about the good deals from your buddies before they're available to the general public.
E-mail me if you're seriously considering it, and I'll give you my advice on which firm to join.

Just be sure to consider all the time and costs of having your license and being a member of all of the associations. In my state, unless you are transacting a minimum of 6 properties a year, you will be losing money (and my state is cheap compared to most). You will have to work for a broker for the first few years, which usually means paying an office fee and commission splits. Schooling is 1-2 weeks and you will have continuing education, training classes, etc. every year to take.
I would recommend interviewing several offices to find out the big picture. Remember, they want you to work at their office, it isn't like a regular job interview. You are interviewing them, not vice-versa. Good Luck!
FLA-Realtor, I know plenty of realtors without the hinderance or ethics
Like chantellemahan said, you ahve to weigh the cost/benefits of being a realtor.
When I call FSBO's one of the first things they ask is if I am a realtor. This is because they get worn down from realtors calling them and saying they have a buyer, getting them to list it with them then sitting on it. So, sometimes being a realtor can be a negative thing depending on your strategy.
I do not condone the bashing of realtors as I have used them since my inception into real estate, they are great people to have on your team and perhaps in your situation it makes sense to be one.
Good Luck
