Depends, are you in low-moderate income area or higher-end. If you are in low-middle income areas, you can check their criminal background and if they've been evicted, if they are considered a sex offender free through your sheriff's office. Some counties have this info on the web.
I use Mr. Landlord, and have been happy with their services. You can find them easily by doing an internet search. Different options are available as to how detailed you want to be.
I joined my local credit bureau for $35 a year under their Landlord Services Membership. they have what they call a Tenant Qualifier for $5.95 a hit. I get (via internet) credit report, public record search, residence history, employment history, fraud search, risk score, creditor contact info. for an additional $9-$15 for each, you can get different criminal searches & a nationwide eviction report.

Ok. Typing "Tenant Check" into Google gave a whole page of good results. Some offering as low as $9.95.
A little time, that's all it takes.
