Tax Lein In Credit Report

I recently went to refinance the home I bought in 2000. On my credit report a state tax lein showed up. It says it was reported in 8/94. I have no idea what this is, and I know it was not on my credit report when I bought my house. How do I handle this? :-?

You should try to see a copy of that tax lien. Check in the land records office or whereever such a lien would be filed. Look at it. Is your Social Security number on it? Is it really you or somebody else with a similar name?

If it is you, did the obligation get paid off? If so, was the release or satisfaction of lien recorded? If not, get the agency that put on the lien to record a release of the lien.

If the lien was never paid, check to see if it is still "alive." It may have lapsed due to a statute of limitations. If it is still alive and valid, paid it.

If the lien is not against you, find out from the credit-reporting agency the procedure to dispute an item on your credit report. Go through that process to get this removed from your credit report.

Oh, incidently, this forum really is about investing in real estate with delinquent property tax situations. You might get some other answers if you were to post on a more general forum.
