I would say yes with any undeveloped land, any older houses, or any additions. In a newer cookie cutter development, where you are not the first owner, I would not feel the need to get a survey.
Ask the previous owner for their survey. And then see if there have been any additions. If the previous owner does not have a survey, did they get a survey? did they get a loan?
Are you talking about an appraisal? A Comparative Market Analysis?
Surveys generally establish property lines/borders, and have no input relating to property value.

i recently paid 295.00 to have a piece surveyed. Do the existing owners have one, if so ask them for a copy.

go to the building/developing forum. read the post entitled "Warning to all . .. ." and then ask if $300 for a survey is a good idea.
