Have a house with a well with a recurring sulphur odor every 2 to 3 months. Only the hot side smells. Draining the hot water heater seems to help, but it always returns. Anyone familiar with this problem and its solution?
This problem occurs frequently here. Usually a result of a chemical reaction with naturally soft or softened (salted) water and the anode rod in hot water heater. If you have a filter you may need to adjust the salt content. Also, if your hot water heater is older it can be a bacteria build up.
There is a water softener, but the water heater is 2 yrs old. makes sense about the build up. Looking for a solution requiring less maintenance than draining the heater. Thanks for the reply.
Ask around to local water softener companies about a filter containing potasium permanganate which oxidizes the water and removes the sulphur smell. About as much maintenance as a water softner-- except the KMG5 comes in a 12 oz bottle rather than 50 lb bags and takes a few ounces to regenerate the filter.

Commlking,
Can always count on you for a good answer. But how does a city boy like you get to know about wells?
