It is in a way stated income. The credit card company has no access to your tax records and cannot verify information. Sometimes though if you would like a credit increase or to get approved for some cards with very high limits they will require bank statements to show proof of funds.

I lied about my income to get my first credit cards. They have some idea on how much money you make since they usually ask what company you work for and your position. Credit card companies have a idea on how much you are making based on your debts and your ability to pay them.

used to do credit cards for a bank, they take what you tell them and they use some safety tricks to protect themselves, like bumping up the rent to 28% of your income and decreaseing what you make if you are in a job that doesnt "sound" like it can make that much. But if you have good credit, lying will get you that credit card, because it is pretty much automated.
