Removing Strong Odors
What is the best way to remove strong pet odors. The previous owner had 2 cats that used the entire downstairs carpet as their litter box(disgusting!). We are ripping up all the carpet but the smell still lingers.
Any ideas?
I htink I posted to your other question. Get an oxone machine in there. I have heard of peopel using bleach and pet neutralizers found at HOme depot. I have used the ozone machines with good results.

A good industrial/janitorial supply house will have an enzyme based odor neutralizer. They work pretty good. Follow manufactures directions.
Charcoal Briquettes - Get a bag of these (just like for your grill), and it will take a lot of the stench out of the air. I take them out of the original bag and put them in garbage bags around the house, in corners of the room and keep the top of the bag open...
In addition, Clean everything very well with Pet/Odor Neutralizers and use Glade Plug-Ins...
The smell will dissapate!
Good Luck!

I assume you have bleached the floors, baseboards and up the wall about 2 feet. Also have you oil based primed and painted?
Brenda
Hi Brenda,
I can run amop with ht water and bleach once the carpet is up then wash the walls 2 feet up too. Why the oil based primer/paint?
Where do you get ozone machines??? can you buy them are they expensive or do you rent them and from where.
You can buy the ozone/ion machines from many sources though if you don't use them a lot they are a little spendy. I think there were some on this site for 600-800.
You can rent them as well. I have used them for pet odors and mold smell etc. very successfully as they kill the bacteria and fungi/mold spores.
This site has a seller of "Aranizor" brand ionizer machines. here is what they claim.
WHAT ARAN™ DOES:
Removes dust, pollen and other particles from the air.
Removes smoke, pet, cooking and most other odors from the air.
(98% of organic odors are removed by the Aranizer.)
"Removes smoke and other odors from carpets, furniture, drapes, clothing etc.
Cleans deep into porous materials to remove odors
Oxidizes chemical fumes and toxic gases.
(Many household materials and appliances produce chemical fumes and gases.)
Kills mold, mildew, bacteria and fungi.
Kills viruses sterilizing the air and surfaces for a cleaner environment"
Stockpro99,
I agree with your first post regarding the ozone generators, They work very well. Ozone actually kills the bacteria which is the cause of the odors.[ Edited by jeff12002 on Date 06/11/2004 ]
If you have a wood subfloor that is stained, I would replace the subfloor. It will pay off in the long run. Cat urine is very difficult to eliminate.
Good luck.
I used one many years ago when I was doing maintenance for some owners of a commercial property that brought their dogs to work and they frequently peed...
Works real well

The best thing I have used for pet oders (having two cats myself) is product Natures Miracle. Can be found at most pet stores.
What kind of a company/supplier would rent out an ozone machine? This sounds like the way to go...
There's another paint-like product too, that the big boxes (Home Depot, etc.) sell that goes on like flat white paint, kills all odors in whatever it's used to cover, then can easily be painted over.
"Kilz" I think it is, and the stores sell it in gallons & 5 gallons.
I've used it and had my contractors use it on several sites and it did the job...pet, smoke, whatever the odor, it does it.
On one MH I bought for peanuts, the smoke odor was a real doozy, but this stuff wiped it out. Amazing!
Kilz works wonders but you have a hard time painting some areas. IT mainly is a sealer if you can seal the odor in.
I have used it with a fair degree of success in smoke damaged buildings. All the odor doesn't disappear but it goes a long way towards remediating it.

Neutroleum Alpha is used by the park services to spray down outhouses after a skunk sprayes them. It can work pretty well to mask the smell. Works best right after the carpets are cleaned.
Not the best for your problem, but it can kill and mask the residual oder.
