What To Do With A Pool With Water

I got a deed to a house about 50 miles South of Chicago . The house has a concrete pool that looks like it is in working condition. Neighbors are complaining there will be mosquitos. I am afraid they will start calling the county to complain and I might get a ticket (or forced court appearances). Has 1-2 feet of water in it. I have never lived in a house with a pool - this is a new thing to me.

Q1: What do I do with this water? Pump it out?

I have seen several web sites saying it could be a bad idea because:

- in summer it gets hot (about 90F in our area is not uncommon) and will crack;

- water pressure from the walls can cause caving in;

Q2: What do you do to prevent pool damage for the winter season (-30F)? Leave some water in? Blow hoses with air pressure to remove water from pool heater, etc?

Please, advise. Thank you.

    You are correct about the pressure and drying out issues, if you decide to drain the pool.

    It will ultimantely depend on how much value this outdoor pool brings to the property. Thats something you will need to research.

    If its a top end pool, it could be economically feasible to fill it and then cover it and get all the pumps working.

    But pools are indeed, a danger to young families and a drain on the finances to maintain.

    Sounds like for now the best would be to pour some additives to the water to prevent mosquito and other infestations.
