so what's a stack/vaccuum effect? is that what i could be seeing at the cathedral ceiling? (cracks at seams, and what appears to be slight moisture discoloration (very subtle greying of paint)
pegula,

If you are right on the lake, you need to look seriously at moisture levels. You'll have high humidity year round.
Stack/vaccuum refers to the tendency of warm air, which carries more water vapor, to rise through cooler air. Convection, that is.
I doubt that is the problem at your cathedral peak.
With a ladder look closely at grey areas. You may have sheetrock showing through a poor paint job. I think this is a real possibility, having "met" your painter.
Also, Inspect and rule out minor roof leak.

Also, you neeed to look at penetrations through the floor from crawlspace. drains, registers, water lines, soil stacks, wiring, central vacuum, dryer vent.
They should all be sealed with a good caulk or foam.
These small cracks will allow a huge amount of moisture up into the home.
Stack/vacuum speaking.
