Too vauge. What size of the house, where is it, what kind of shingles, do you want, Have you considered siding? Your best bet is to call around, and ask people who do it for a living. Also talk to the Home Depot, they usualy know a thing or two about it.

Most roofers in my area have a price per square plus anything additional requested. Also I always tear off shingles and the quotes never include replacing plywood if needed.
You absolutely have to get a licensed contractor to do it. Other variables include the roof pitch, number of valleys, dormers, and rotten plywood should be included in your estimate when needed. Some states require you tear off if there is more than one layer, some don't. Three tabs are cheapies and homely, but if you are just rehabbing, who cares. Also, get references from your contractor, looks are deceiving. The lowest price isn't always the best deal.
Im a roof, and most roofers charge by the sq, and depending on the size and type of siding you need will make the price go up. But the average is about $21 per sq. Also if you have to many layers meaning its been re-roofed to many time like 5 times you might want to think about a tear of cause the roof my not support the weight. but make sure you shop around cause there are alot of roofer out there that might try to over charge someone that not knowing, the basics are .1 Roofing, 2 Tar papar (underlayer) 3 Sheet metal and the labor.

I believe he did state the shingles he wants.
What does the size of the house have to do with it? The price from contrators usually comes down to price per square.
I can see if you said how many valleys, dormers etc as was said above.

Curious why you would always tear off?

What do you mean have you considered siding?
abstractprone- now I'm even more curious, why do you say you absolutely have to get a licensed contractor to do it?
