Air Conditioner Costs

I was wondering what others are paying for air conditioners/installation.

I have a quote for an outside A/C unit (condenser) 2.5 ton for $750 installed. How does this compare what you are paying? After negotiating he said he would do it for $650. I hope I'm not beating him up too much, as he makes service calls for $20.

You're talking about installing AC in a house that doesn't already have it, into your central heat system, or are you just replacing the outside unit in one? It sounds like it's the whole system by your question, and if you can get it for $650, I'd say your doing pretty well. Not sure where you live, but around here, I've been quoted no less than about $1500. One place wanted that much just to replace the condenser unit outside (that was the only quote I had for that, because he repaired the one I had). Around here you might be able to get someone to put an AC unit in your window for 650 bucks, but that's about it. Z

I totally agree, that is very cheap as just having the outside unit repaired in this area could run almost 650. Send him to VA !!!!!!

Don't forget the duct work that needs to be done. This is another cost that isn't cheap.

    Hey Guys,

Thanks for the feedback. I was speaking of replacing an existing outside condenser. The guy removed the old unit, installed the new one, added needed freon, and tested. Total cost $650.

BTW it was a luxaire unit that he installed.

That seems cheap. The last one I replaced was $900

Geez, you guys need to send some of them low rates here to Atlanta. I'm having a 3.5 ton A/C outside unit replaced with a 3.5 ton Heat Pump, and it's gonna cost me $1750.00!!

I am a Plumbing & Heating contractor, and the condenser itself costs at least $650. You must have gotten a used unit or it fell off the back of a truck! I would have bid the job at aprox. $1,000.
