Not sure of the long term effects or if there is any dammage to the tub (metal) but i have used Muriatic acid to remove stains. Watch the drain cover, handles, faucet. It will remove the chrome. We can get it at wal-mart for about $8.00 a gallon I think. It does a great job removing stains from toilet bowls and removing the calcium from the holes in the flush ring. We use a syringe from an ag center (used to give cows and horses shots) and attach a rubber tube (gas line from small engine repair shop)and then can inject the acid up into the ring. Of course use your precautions (eye safety glasses, rubber gloves etc. ) It dilutes well with water so have plenty on hand.
Finn-
Was it a cast iron tub?

It was not, but it was definately rusting. They clean all that up before they glaze it.
