I am researching investment options in the foreclosure market. Besides purchasing and selling foreclosed properties, what are alternative ways to acquire properties or an interest in properties on the verge of foreclosure?

You can go down to the county courthouse and ask for a listing of foreclosure dates. From that listing you can see when the houses are going up auction. If you can contact those people before it gets auctioned off as foreclosed properties, then you can get some great deals. This is called pre-foreclosure investing. There are seminars and materials available on pre-forclosure investing if you're interested. I'm pretty sure Ron LeGrand has some material on it. If not, there are other people selling products that will get you started in Pre-Forclosures. Hope this helps.
