Public Online Title Search

grin Can a title search be done online? I enter here thinking I could perform a title search.

If by 'title search" you mean information about the property, the amount and types of information available online vary widely from state to state and even county to county. I suggest you go to the website for the county you're interested in and see what, if anything, can be searched online.

Some counties have lots of title info and even copies of recorded docs to view online. Some rural counties still only record docs in big ledgers in the back room. I've worked in both, and others which are only partly online. Online (and courthouse computer or ledger) searches can yield useful info, and may be all that a lawyer or pro title researcher would find too. Depending on your threshold of risk (and, more importantly, whether any banks might be involved, now or in the future) you might still consider coughing up the dough for title insurance or at least a title "opinion," just in case

Despite finding usefull info online for yourself, I would highly suggest spending a little money on the offset and PAYING a PRO to do one for you as well.

Rather pay a little now than a lot later
