I like letters. I hate signs. They trash the community. But they do work. Letters are non threatening. If the seller is motivated then they will do what ever you tell them to do in the letter.
I have used the USPS site for post cards. Don't much care for that. I now do hand address and use a little mail merge stuff along with doing some unique things with different mailings.
We too suggest you mix things up. Our success has been from an ad in a "free" newspaper and the 4x6 postcard sized flyers (black & white) placed in free places. i.e. grocery store, laundry facility, etc.
I personally think signs don't work that well and can be a waste of time and money maintaining. (Not to mention I got a call from the city/suburbs each time to take them down).
Postcards are great for blanketing an area and don't have to be personalized. So you can use whatever service you want and have them print and mail.
I think 1-page letters are the best. I do the entire front of the envelope by hand (not mine - "flowery" feminine handwriting) - even the return address...w/o your name and a nice "flowery" stamp.
I am so new to this too but I am going to do all of them. I believe where one doesn't work the others will pick up the slack. Test test test. I think if you have them all going at once your chances for finding a deal are better.
If you're worried about the legality/ethics of bandit signs, I like the suggestion I saw here a few months ago about having a 'route,' and putting them up on Friday evening, then taking them down on Sunday evening. Keeps the complaints and thefts down. Maybe you can even use the same nails. 'Course if you have ANY class, you'd pay some birddog wannabe to do it for you.

Try a mixture of all and see what works best for you.....I use signs, letters and postcards and get responses on all of them.
It depends on what your marketing piece says and who your market is

Good luck,
