Our renters moved out and the house is badly infested with mice. I put out some poison - looks like blue rock salt. Question is, when they eat that and die, will the carcasses stink up the place? What is the best way to deal with them?
Snap traps work the best. Buy them in bulk and set out a whole bunch of them. Beware of the droppings, they can carry a virus, Hanta Virus, people die from it every year. Spray down the place with a diluted water and bleach mixture to be safe.
The poison works but the mice usually die nearby, for a good week it will smell as the flesh rots and the maggots take over. Cats that are good mousers can also be harmed by ingesting a poisoned mouse. Seen it happen.
And fill up those points of entry with steel wool, then leave some traps out as an extra measure.
I just had this problem in a rental. The tenants called me to tell me there were mice. I talked to my pest control company that I have used several times about it. They went to the house and put out a poisen that makes them really thirsty and dehidrated. This makes them go outside to look for something to drink. The tenants have not seen them since. Been at least three months. Well worth the $80 or whatever it was.
I have had really good luck with the sticky traps. On the package, it reads "no need for bait" - but I put a little peanut butter in the center of each sticky trap. These do not work well if it is below 40 degrees, though.
FYI mice can fit through a hole 1/4 of an inch.
How long does the smell last?
Can I fill a hole with that sprayable super yellow stuff in a can that hardens? Will they eat thru it?
Not sure how long the smell last. Weeks? Month? The expanding foam will not work, you have to fill the hole with steel wool.
