Low Ceiling Basement..ideas?

Hey gang...I have a property I purchased subject to. Nice little 2/1 with a decent sized basement..maybe 700-800 sq feet. The problem is, the basement has a pretty low ceiling, about 6' 8" or so.......seems too low to sheetrock, right? I think I saw on a cable show where the hung rods and simply draped some colored fabric from each rod in a looping fashion...looked kinda neat. Any other ideas for a low ceiling?

Also, I think we are going to add some carpet and just paint the concrete walls instead of trying to add drywall throughout. We would have to first frame it before adding drywall I believe. Any color that adds a nice touch to a concrete basement wall?

Any other minimal cost ideas for the basement are welcome! I wanted to finish it, (sheetrock, add canned lighting and carpet, maybe molding, but our agent is not sure we would get mch out of it, investment wise.

Thanks in advance.

you might watch the use of carpet. With the humidity of basements they can start to smell pretty quickly.

    Something lighten up the basement.

Lighting and a light colored linoleum tile or roll (I pref tile).

Anything with the windows, clear glass v. frosted.

    Pergo like flooring?

A cheap solution for your ceiling would be to paint everything (joist, wires, pipes, ducts, ect.) flat black. It actually looks pretty decent in my opinion.

As for painting the walls....you could go white, or perhaps even better find out what the hot color is in your area.

And if your agent isn't sure you'll get your money out of the drywall, cans, ect., then listen to him/her and don't over spend for the area.

    Good Luck grin

You can sheetrock or panel between the joists to hide the wires and ducts. It adds height between the joists.

But, 6'8" won't meet code for living space so you can't add a bedroom, just a play space.

    Good luck.
