  Knock on doors, contact neighbors, contact people with the same last name (relatives?), send a certified letter, etc, etc

  Takes a little gumption, but that's pretty much it. You might want to prepare a little speech ahead of time (not that you would quote it, just be more prepared).
  
  "Hi, my name is ... I buy real estate for investment purposes and I was driving by your house and wondering if you might be willing to sell your house. Are you the owner? Can you tell me how to contact the owner then? Could I call you back in the next day or so to ask you some more questions about the house or come by and take a look inside?

  When you were a youngster, did you ever go house to house selling things like magazines for school? Pretty similar, just you are buying instead of selling. It really isn't that hard.

  if it is a rehab. the yard and house condition are usually unsitely for the neighborhood and the neighbors are more than willing to give you the names of the owners.......kenmax

  First I would check the public record and see if the owner lived there gby finding out where the tax statement is mailed. THe renter might not want you to ruin his deal
