Kitchen Cabinets - Refinish? New Doors?

I am purchasing a house that the cabinets have been updated 10 years ago. The cabinets themselves are in good condition, the look is outdated (old wood look).

Can cabinets be repainted? What type of paint do you use?

What companies out there make doors for cabinets? I have done rehabs where the doors were plain and it would have been better to put new doors on the cabinets but I could not find a place that did this. I am in the Tampa area.

Any other tips with cabinets would be greatly appreciated.

I have a guy in Orlando, the Kitchen Magician, that paints kitchen cabinets. He does a great job and repairs and chipped or peeling doors. I have used him three times for old formica cabinets. He is not cheap. If say the kitchen would take 3k total - buy the cabinets, countertop, sink, faucet, pay someone to demo, pay someone to install - then he would cost 1.2k. Now his repainting is not going to look as nice as new maple cabinets. But it is certainly less money and less hassle. I guess it depends on the house and the neighborhood.

There is a company called Decorative Specialties that you can just buy doors from. They are nationwide and I know they have a warehouse in North Carolina. You order from a catalog and they ship in a week. wonderful quality. We have used them for over 5yrs. and put their products in million dollar homes.

I forgot to give you the web address for Decorative Specialties. It is www.decore.com. there products are beautiful and as I mentioned we have used them in upscale homes, but they have a wide variety and pricing is good.

You can go to a store like Home Depot or a cabinet store and buy refacing kits.
The kits range from cheap to really high end.
I usually do that when the cabinets are such that I do not want to try painting.
If you want to paint go to a paint store and ask them for paints for cabinets. I have done that several times and found it to be a big pain as far as getting everything streak free and without marks to show it was painted but after lots of prepping and care doing the work it came out fantastic everytime
