Identifying Warzones..help?

I am a newbie and I am looking to wholesale in the upstate NY area. Since I don't live there I am having a hard time identifying warzones (low income, heavy crime areas). What is the best way to identify warzones in out of town areas? Any response would be greatly appreciated!

Ive gone to www.homegain.com before and they have reports by zipcode that show median income, crime rates broken down by type(ie. murder, rape, burglary, etc.)

You still can have vast differences within a particular zipcode so nothing is fool poof.

If your serious about working a area,
it's a good investment to take a few days
and get a "feel" for it. A "guide" someone
    once gave me is this:
    1. talk to the mail person in your neighbor hood, ask there experience w/ the area. You can bet walking the beat they know what's going on.
    2. Ask the firemen, a lot of "incidents" in the area?
    3. Ask the police in the area, they won't
say directly if there's problems, but ask
the right Q & A, and you''ll get what you need.
    4. the utility people are also a good resource, what areas do they feel
    uncomfortable in?
You'll learn & earn with these!
    Good Luck!!
