Help Getting Rid Of Smell

Dows anyone have any advice on how to remove the smell of smoke after a tenant moves out?

I have a similar problem. My previous tenants ran a zoo. Somehow 2 dogs turned into 3 dogs, 3-4 cats, a litter of kittens and a litter of puppies. The place stinks of animal excrement. This morning I pulled up the carpet and the pad. My wife is currently mopping the place and I hope to be rid of the smell. If not, I will have to paint the walls/baseboards.

I was talking to a friend who quit smoking and she washed the walls and had the carpet cleaned, but when she leaves the apartment locked up for a while it still smells. I would wash the walls, paint them, and replace the carpet, or just rent to another smoker and put off the cleaning/fixup.

Would love input on my pet cleanup problem if anyone has any!

had the same problem in one of my rentals, urine went thru carpet, pad, and stained cement. tried cleaning didnt work. my pm had the handyman seal the floor before replacing pad. the carpet was ok from the cleaning. no more smell.
    hope this helps.

Thanks for the ideas, however here is what I have done so far.

Kilz on the walls. Paint over the Kilz. New carpet and pad. Smell is still around.

    Ideas?

I was wondering if there is a solution for a strong musty smell in an older home which is compounded by a general BO smell from the elderly owners.

I've had good luck with odor out. Knok out is another product. These are biological agents that eliminate the smell. They worked a cat urine smell for me.

What about these ozone machines I've heard of. Do they work?

FoggyBottom you posted: " I was wondering if there is a solution for a strong musty smell in an older home which is compounded by a general BO smell from the elderly owners."

If this property has a basement, start there. I recently rehabed a older home. In the basment I power washed the whole thing and dried it out with dehumidifiers. I then 'Drylocked' (that's paint that seals out water and smells) the walls, Kilz the ceiling and paint on the floor. Not only does it look better, but the smell in the enitre 2 story home is 100% improved! When I got the home there were 'stick-ups' everywhere to mask the smell. A good clean foundation is where to start.
    wink
