Zoning Info

Does anyone know if there is a spreadsheet that explains what the different Zoning Lettering means?.... For example, RS-3, RS-1, RT-4, B2, etc... I need this for the Chicago Land Area.

The City Of Chicago Web site and Google searched did not help to much...

Now that I have returned to this forum after a long hiatus, I thought I should make a clarification for those of you that read this.

Zoning districts are established by local bodies - i.e. zoning designations are not universal - i.e. the excellent references cited by commercialking are applicable to Chicago, but not elsewhere - everywhere has their own zoning designations.

Hell, we just invented a new one up here to accomodate buildings the school district sold off that were former schools located in residential areas. Existing zoning designations here - the B1, B2, R1, R2, etc... would have either restricted the uses too much by way of zoning it residential and not allowing any commercial use, or in the alternative zoning it one of the business or god forbid industrial and allowing anything - having a bar or the like buy the school buildings in residential areas and raise hell in quiet neighborhoods did not seem palatable to anyone either..

So, we invented a new zoning designation called Community Business and allowed quiet little law offices and the like to lease space in the cool looking historic school buildings from the developer that bought them and everybody was happy.

The moral is, check with your LOCAL authorities on zoning - it should be codified in the municipal code or the equivalent. It is different everywhere.
