I'm looking at a place that had alotta cats. Removing carpets and airing windows is one thing. But the place is all hardwood floors. Should I be worried? What can cure this? Thanks
if its made it to the subfloor and on a regular basis it can be a problem. i've seen it bad enough not to buy. not saying it couldn't be fixed but i didn't want to deal with it. i went on to something better......km
There is a good chance you will have to tear up the floorboards. If it has soaked in you will never air it out. I looked at a house today, same issue...I think they had about 20 cats from the look...er smell of it! If the deal is good with the possibility of putting in new flooring then definitely consider it otherwise walk. Good luck!
I had a the same problem with a house in Charleston. At one time there were 2 cats that really messed up the carpet. After removing the carpet and the pad, I cleaned the floors with regular cleaner, then placed regular charcoal (no lighter fluid) in plates. One in each room except 2 in living room. Closed the house for about 3 days. Made sure the AC was off. There has not been any smell since.
If you are going to be putting carpet on the floors anyhow, then prime and seal the crap out of the hardwood. Take a black light in first so you can see the areas that have the most damage and apply extensively there. and then I would reccomend moping the floors with pachouli oil. Then lastly, definately rent an ozone machine. You might have just a whiff on a muggy day but problably not. Also check the walls and the trim too in case the cats sprayed there also.

always hear people talking about cat odor and never really see one myself until this morning. a nice little 2 beds/one full bath, ranch filled with nothing but cat pees and feasys. i was told that 30 cats lived here and the owner let them be wild in the house. and the finished basement ceiling fell down(it may be caused by cat pee soaked down to the basement). the house is all hardwood floor, new kitche with skylight, anderson windows, even jaccuzzi!!!. i can still smell something from my sweater!
Another solution is what professional crime scene cleaners use. I think it is Anti Icky Poo. (I'd tell you where to get it but I don't think I can put up the web address). Just google it and the website that sells it will come up. It is $18.99 for a quart bottle.
I've done a lot of research on smells- because I'm a landlady who has had to smell just about everything- and right now I'm fascinated with crime scene cleaning products. You know they have to be experts at what they do.
