information for pre-forclosures
I know this may be a dumb question but I am trying to learn. Can someone give me some pointers on approaching these persons or point me towards some good informational materials?

Read the posts in the Foreclosures/Pre-Foreclosure/Short Sale forum. You can even do a search through the forums and articles for more information.
For more information on what to say when you approach them, do a search on scripts.
