Fixing Plaster Walls, Need Help

Hi-

I have some cracked plaster walls that I have chipped the plaster away and there is a another layer behind the plaster, like concrete. It has long cracks in it also. What should I use to fill the cracks in the concrete surface behind the plaster?

We had "wet" plaster in the house I grew up in.

My Dad always used "spackle" (sp?), and as I recall it was the oil based one. This is >20 years.

Thanks cjmazur, but what is that concrete stuff behind the plaster? And how should it be repaired?

Thanks for the excellent answer Chris.
I usually do method 2 that you mentioned with patching plaster.
And yes, the wooden lathe covered with a mixture of cement and horsehair.
So, would you recommend filling that cement crack with patching plaster? Or
    something else?

I would just use the patching plaster. If the hole/crack is wide (more than an inch or two) you might want to put some expanded metal mesh in there to hold and reinforce the plaster. Or wad up some chicken wire and use that.

    Chris
