Fire Alarms?

Does anyone know what the rules generally are for fire alarms in a rental condo? Am I required to have them or are they the responsibility of the renter if they want them?

    Do you mean smoke detector?

Jeeze, my bad on that one!

Yes, just asking about smoke detectors.

They only cost $10, you are lucky if you have a renter that asked you first...I would run to home depot and buy one for them. Its $30 for the ones that also detect Carbon Monoxide, that seems to be the hip thing in home safety nowdays...

Check your local codes. Each city may have their own codes.

I have rentals in several different towns. In Winona you must have a smoke dector in each bedroom. If there was a hard wired one there you must have one now. Also any remodleing requires you to put in hard wired alarms. (Just the ones you get at Home Depo). In Albert Lea I need to have 1 per floor. Nothing in bedrooms. I myself put them in every bedroom and places where early warning would save lives.

Minnesota has now made it state law. Everyone (homeowners and landlords) must have smoke dectors and Carbon dectors on every floor. Landlords have until 2008 to update all properties but city inspectors are already flagging them so I just have been doing it when tenants move out.

Check with your insurer as well. Their requirements may be more stringent than some local codes.

Law or no Law regarding them. You should always have smoke detectors. Put at least three in the house. I always put a fire extinguisher attached underneath the sink also. You can get one for $20. Mount it under the sink. You never know. One of the biggest causes of fires is in the kitchen. If you have a fire extinguisher, your $20 will pay off.
