Face To Face Presentation To Seller
When arriving at a person's home to inspect it, or to present and/or negotiate an offer, What type of appearance works best ?
Should you try to portray yourself as a successfull investor with shirt and tie, and pull up in a Benz, or shoud you be casual with a 5k beater so that it may be easier to build rapport with them ? This may seem silly, but I think presentation is VERY improtant. They are forming their first impression of you, whether they like you , whether they want to deal with you.
Does any one have a proven strategy on this ? Thanks -Bart
I think it could do good and bad for your image. But I think either way it wont kill the deal. The deal is going to be won on you negotiating skills and the kind of deal you are giving them, not the clothes you wear and the car you drive.
Best of luck,
James
You should dress down to their level, don't show off. You don't want to seem like a slick salesman :-D
Hey,
Neither approach is correct (neither is dressing down to their level). The correct answer is...be yourself. If you are comfortable in slacks and short sleeve short then wear that. If you are comfortable in a suit, wear that. You can't pretend to be something you aren't, so don't try.
As for cars...do you own a Benz and a $5k beater??? If you don't have two cars, then this is waste of time for you to be pondering. If it was me, I would drive the Benz, because i know it will not breakdown.

i agree, be your normal self, there is no point in dressing up/down. Wear what your would normally wear.
and if you normally drive that benz, then do that, just dont be cocky when you meet them
Thanks for the advice. I am in the process of taking over a lease for a 2001 CLK 55 AMG for $540/month, and the thought occured to me that if I show up in this car, the owners will assume that I am some sort of slick salesman that is going to take advantage of them. Or perhaps the flip side is that it adds credibility to myself, so they will have fewer doubts in my ability to do whatever I am promising to do... what do you think ? :-?
I believe the look is secondary; The first thing you have to get your point accross and let them understand that you are there to help them in their situation. There are owners that won't even allow you to approach their house, and there are some who are willing to listen. Be yourself.
I agree with Bruce. Looking and acting like a knowledgabe professional is more important than just the look itself. If you are unsure of your ability is will show regardless of your outfit.
Be courteous , empathetic and, above all, know your stuff.
C- :-o
Hey Bart,
I am going to one step further with my advice giving and tell you, you should NOT get this car. Unless you can pay cash for a car, you can not afford the car. If you follow that golden rule, you will sleep much better at night.
Now the CLK 55 AMG is a great car (AMG is the performance tuner for Mercedes), but all I see is $540 per month leaving your pocket and you get NOTHING for it at the end (because it is a lease). In fact, your insurance and gas consumption will MUCH higher in this car than a "standard" car, so there is even more money out of your pocket. And don't forget speeding tickets (with 340+ HP under your foot, you are going to drive it fast).
