  Last year I was helping my friend look for his birth mother and I purchased that web detective and the only information that they give you is websites you can find by yourself and other websites that you have to pay for the searches. And when I tried to get my refund all I got was a runaround, I never did receive it and I just finally gave up on it. In my opinion it is a complete rip-off!!! Of course, that was last year, it might be different now. (Although I really doubt it!!!)
  I was really disappointed because they make the advertisements seem so great. But it isn't. It is a waste of money!!!
  Of course, that was just my experience.

  try The Ultimate White Pages online. It taps into six different white pages. I have a lot of luck with it, and it's free. Or, KnowX can get you a lot of info, for a small fee. :-D

  I agree with mrcvm. I had web detective and all it had was a bunch of links to other free sites which I already had access too. Totaly worthless. If you really want to find someone there are paid sites but beware that you will never get an unlisted number from them.

  I don't know about Web Detective.
  
  In my area you can go to the county's website and search property information by typing in an address. It will tell you the owner of the property.
  
  Search Google for "___ county property information" (filling in the blank with your county, of course!).
  
  Also type in Google "reverse directory" and find a phone directory where you can type in addresses and it tells you the name and phone number of whoever lives there. (note, that's not necessarily the owner.)

  I found Web Detective totally useless. It only seems to give information links to contact which can be done searching the internet yourself.

  Thanks so much guys to all who answered you just saved me $30 at least, but the question remains. How else is the best find to find property owner who does not live in the property? What's the easiest, best way?

  To find out of area property owners, I'd you could ask your tax assessor's office for a list of absentee owners. Failing that, try a local title company. Chicago Title (at least in my area) offers an online database that you can search for absentee owners. Hope that helps!

  DO NOT subscribe to WEB DETECTIVE!! Some sources of listings would be www.whitepages.com. Another very informative and reasonably priced source for skip-tracing is www.merlindata.com.

  Are you going to tell the police I was only trying to locate the owner, I really wasn't going to sell it? Most places call this a felony when you advertise to sell something you don't own.

  A source for phone numbers is to find out if utilities are hooked up at the property. Sometimes you can't get it directly but my "friend" at the city assessor's office calls right over and gets it for me.

  General reference I use is infospace.com - it does reverse phone number and address searches as well as your standard searches. To find general areas and ages of people I use peopledata.com. If you want a skip-trace service, try accurint.com.
