Cost Of Carpet?
All,
What are you seeing as typical cost of fully installed carpet per square foot or yard? When I say fully installed I mean including the price of carpet, new pad, labor to remove old pad & carpet and labor to install new pad & carpet.
Also, is it typical that the layout of a room could mean that one has to purchase as much as 40% extra carpet to minimze seams?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.

I use $3 per sqft as my estimator.
Carpet normally comes with a precut width of 12 ft. If the room you want to cover is only 8 x 10, then you will buy a 8 x 12 piece. The installer will trim the extra two feet at the jobsite.
So, yes, depending upon the dimensions of the room and/or its configuration, you will have some trim waste -- 20% in this example.
If the sales person happens to measure your 8 x 10 room in such a way that the nap runs in the direction of the longest dimension, then he will sell you a piece that is 12 x 10 -- increasing your trim waste to 33%.
Room configurations add complexity to the job, too, and increase trim waste. Rooms with non-square corners, outsets for bay windows, as well as hallways and closets, present challenges to the budget minded rehabber
I agree, panic. May I add that closets and sometimes hallways can often be done with the scraps from rooms, thus saving carpet and money.

$4.00 per yard is about the going rate for the carpet. installation....there is no need to pull up the tack strip if it is not loose especially on a concrete floor it may not go back as well as it was before....concrete is tough tto get tack strip to stay in..... also if you do not know how to figure sq. yardage it is length times width and then divide by 9 and that will give you square yardage.
I use two different firms. They both charge $11.00 Sq Yd installed. That includes carpet , pad and installation as well as take up old carpet and pad and remove from job site.

It does depend on the type of carpet. I cheap carpet installed for $1.50 per sqft for the actual carpet I have to purchase (meaning I have to pay for the waste as well). If you are paying around $5 per sqft, you can get hard wood. If it is a rental, maybe try the laminate wood floors. I have just started experimenting with that about a year ago and so far so good.
