Collection

I had a collection agency call me up here in New York, which seemed a little strange to me since I just moved here a couple of months ago. I made the mistake of sending a check to the original creditor
with my New York address and here comes a call from a collection agency. My question is, can the debt follow me from North Carolina, and what can I do to rude collectors besides cursing them out? Also, if I just pay it off totally, will my credit score go up, or remain where it is?
I read somewhere that you can ask for the debt to be settled with the original creditor, but the agent found that idea ridiculous. I am in college and I've got my first house under contract believe it or not. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanx

Get ahold of the original creditor and offer a cash settlement, 50-60% or so. They can take the payment and call off the dogs.

    hope this helps,

Ok first off most likely the original creditor sold the account which basically means that they have wiped their hands clean. They most likely got about 10% of what the loan was worth and there is bacically nothing they are going to do for you. Now the real question is do you want to pay the debt? If so you need to write a letter of intent stateing that you will pay off the amount only if they agree in writing to remove the negative inquiry. No removal no payment. If they start to hassle you about it or you dont want to pay it you have to send a cease communcation letter stateing by law they can no longer try to contact you in any way. And poof they are gone. As far as the original creditor I would dispute on my credit report as "not mine". Let me know what the response is and if not taken off we can go from there.
