Cell Phones
Hi All, I need an opinion on a Virgin (pay as you go cell phone). I have a Tracfone now and its not to bad but I would like to get one with a fliptop lid, which as far as I can see is Virgin. If anyone is using Virgin, can they tell me how the performance is. I would appreciate any comments on it.

Ok. As a general rule, you can use most any phone on most any system. You just have to have it set up when you buy it.
If you already own your phone, or buy a new one, you can get regular monthly cell service through cingular or verizon, or the many other companies WITHOUT SIGNING A CONTRACT.
That may be cheaper than paying the exhorbitant rate that TracPhone charges per minute.
Figure out which phone you want and then contact that company. I'm sure they'll be more than happy to help you set it up for the service that you want.

I guess the real question is, does the style of phone really mean that much to you. If so, then I would look around and get the best deal on the one you really want to have. Good luck. I personally have a free one and the service I have is the reason I bought service, not the style of phone. For me, it's all about practicality, not looks. but that is just my 2 cents worth.
Without more information there is a few angles to go here:
1. You don't have enough credit or good enough credit to qualify for regular service. This type of service offers by far the best bang for the buck.
2. You don't talk a lot of minutes so it is cost effective to use virgin mobile. Virgin mobile primarily uses the sprint network in Iowa. I haven't researched it if it is the same throughout the country but I'm guessing it is likely. Basically the first 10 minutes each day are billed at $0.25 and after that $0.10 per minute.
If you are like most people I know you will want to do all that is possible to get a regular phone service type thing. For this business I love nextel because all the contractors use it and it drastically lowers my minutes. 20% of my talk time on my phone is in direct connect.
It is NOT true that you can use almost any cell phone with any carrier. There is several different frequencies and systems. Some are compatible, some are not. Some phones are digital, some are analog, some are both, some do multiple systems, some dont.
By systems, I mean AMPS, NAMPS, GSM,CDMA, TDMA, PCS, etc... and if you think they are all compatible, think again.
