Can I Start Now?
I was wondering if anyone could give me their opinion on my situation. I just turned 18, I'm motivated and I want to do something with my life and real estate really interests me as a career. Instead of spending four plus years in school for a degree that I might not be able to use, real estate seems like a great way to jump start into a career. I know I need to get a license. I'm not sure what the difference is between broker and sales agent. If anyone could give me their opinion or advice I'd appreciate it. It’s great to see someone so young be motivated and thinking about the future. College can be beneficial beyond the education and degree. You learn to deal with and communicate with all types of people. This is a great skill to have for the real world. You can also gain some business skills that will come in handy no matter what profession you choose. If you decide to go to school you can bird-dog in your spare time.
Bird-dogging is a great way to learn the ropes, especially if you plan to become an Investor. You find motivated seller leads for pro Investors, and they will pay you a referral fee if they are able to close. More importantly you can learn a great deal from the real life transactions you will be exposed to. When you provide good usable information that saves Investors time and money, then they won't mind taking time to help you learn the business. The key is providing useful, qualified leads. Bird-dogging will give you a good idea of what’s it’s like to be a Real Estate Investor, and you can decide if it’s really for you. Good luck with whatever path you choose.

Wow! It's great to see some as motivated as you are! What state are you living in / planning to work in? Are you thinking of working as an agent, an investor, or both? What are some of your longer term plans, www.i.e. why real estate?

First of all, thank you to both of you for your replies. To jshapiro, I live in WNC. There's not a lot of opportunity in this region. I've gone back and forth with different options as far as school and careers. It would be hard to go to school for something that I'm not motivated to do. The local schools don't have anything for real estate so I just assume not go. Real estate just peaks my interests. I know the realtors here do well for themselves and I just really think I would enjoy having a job in this area. Which is important to me just like most. As far as being an agent or investor, right now I'm just looking at agent. Later on there's no telling.
