Buying Foreclosures In NEw York

Can anyone give me information on what you need to have upfront as far as downpayments on a foreclosure in New York,and how many days you may have to pay the balance on a successful bid? Does it vary from state-to-state or among different lienholders? Is a commiment from a bank that you are eligible for a mortgage on a certain foreclosed property enough to hold it? ANy information you can give would be appreciated!
