I read "Getting Started in Real Estate Investing" by Michael & Jean Thomsett. It was recommended on this site, and I think it's a good basic beginner's book. Covers lots of info such as how to assess your area's market cycle, determining best type of props and investment strategies for your RE goals, how to set up your books, working with agents, and also looks at other types of RE investing (such as REITs, tax liens, etc.) I would recommend it for a great overview as it really does cover a lot. I got my copy cheap on Amazon's used section. (like $13 or so.)
