There is not really a typical or standard fee. I have paid $500 - $1,000 for a name and number from relatives that knew the people and knew their story. I usually pay $1-2k when a bird dog has a pretty good deal lined up. If the deal is under contract, locked up and ready to go AND it is a great deal, they might get $3-5k.
It all depends how much work you have done and how good a deal you brought to the investor.
I think what you are describing here is actually wholesaling not birddogging.
A Birddog does NOT place houses under contract nor they earn anywhere near 15% of profits.
A Birddog is generally a new (newer) investor who does NOT have sufficient knowledge to work the deal. They gather as much information as possible concerning the house and then turn that information over to a seasoned investor. For that they receive a fee. Generally between a few hundred dollars and $1000.
I put high standards on myself as a bird dog. anyone can say, "hey I drove by this property yesterday and it looks empty, maybe it would be a good deal."
I take a lot of time coordinating information and finding specific properties for my buyers. I do not buy them, but I do get an assignment fee of approximately 15% of gross profit, which considers repairs but not holding or closing.
There are obviously different degrees of bird dog out there. I posted my topic because, if you want to make the kind o f money I make then you follow my steps. pretty easy.
I love this place, very insightful and diverse. good luck guys.
