Best Way To Paint Over Stained Wood
Hello everyone,
I need to paint some trim & front door that have a dark brown high gloss stain on them. What is the best way to make sure the paint sticks & the stain does not bleed through?

I would first buy a deglosser, I think that is what it is called. You wipe it on and so that it dulls the gloss coat of the old paint. Then you paint over it within a couple hours.
I would recommend a KILZ primer to hide the dark color, it also will give you a good surface for your final coat. Go with an oil paint if you can.

When I said OIL based I meant get the KILZ oil based version. Kilz now comes in a LATEX primer also. It is not as effective as the oil version. I would then do my final coat in latex paint. An oil based primer will give you much better adhesion.
Agree.. OIL based is the only way to go!

For small jobs, which apparently this one is, yes. (He said it was for trim around the front door). For detached trim, yes. It also works amazingly well for priming such things as quarter-round and base shoe before installing. Heat vents are yet another thing that spraying works 10X better than brushing. (Specifically referring to the old cast-iron ones prevalent in houses/duplexes 60 years and older which have been painted 4 dozen times before).
Everyone has unique tactics when it comes to rehabbing, and 8 years of experience plus two dozen books have taught me quite a few time and money-saving shortcuts. Rather than immediately criticize others you may rather try a few of them yourself, and that goes for me as well.
