Best Way To Dig A Hole...
Hello All,
I am trying to jack up some floor joists. The floors slope to a certain spot in 3 rooms. I plan on digging to the code required depth (18" i believe) and laying a pier block then using a telescope jack which (I think) is designed to be permanently installed. Since the hardwood flooring is in decent shape I am also trying not to remove the hardwood flooring and subfloor to accomodate the digging of the hole from the top. The distance between the dirt and the bottom of the floor joists is 2.5 feet at most and maybe less than 2 feet. How would you suggest i dig down the 18 inches to place the peir block? Not much room to use a shovel...

Have you crawled up under there and inspected for mold, fungus, wood rot and termites, I just inspected a house like you mentioned and several of the floor Joist were failing. due to rote and termites. The crawl space was very damp due to no cross ventilation. The There was three areas, one in the middle of the front LR and under the master bathroom and at the back sliding glass door. The sellers had laid new floor decking over it and installed new carpet, but when you walked over the floor they not only sagged but you could feel the floors springing.
