Hi Mel...
You don't really need to be schooled in any particular background. Your best education will probably come from books, courses and forums like this one to educate you in REI.
Be sure to check out the topics posted on this Beginners forum atleast once a day. There is always questions being asked here that will be relevant one way or another to you and your goals.
This is a good place to educate your self on the basics of REI. Also, check out the articles on this site. Some are very wel written and geared toward newbies.
Consider taking the real estate licensing course, but don't sit for the exam unless you want to become licensed. It may be a little expensive, but you will get exposed to real estate contracts, real estate law, and mortgage financing.
A good orientation course is the Carleton Sheets material. The Sheets course has all the basics of real estate plus introductions to most of the creative techniques used today.
Once you pick a niche, you might want to purchase a more focused course on the subject or technique.
Meanwhile, if you are able to digest all the postings on these boards you will get an education here as well.

The university of hard knocks is the best school you can attend.
I would start by reading two books by Robert Kiyosaki:
1. Rich Dad Poor Dad
2. Cashflow Quadrant
Robert Kiyosaki also sells a very good real estate investing DVD/CD course to cover the very basics.
