Abandoned Car?
I was relieved to have a tenant move out unexpectedly at the beginning of this month. I was probably going to end up evicting because of the non-running cars he was always rebuilding and all of the car parts left in the parking area.
The day he moved out there was still two engine blocks and a car outside. I talked to him about this and he told me he would come by on the weekend to get them with a friends truck. That was two weeks ago and they are still there. The blocks go to the dump - what do I do with the car????
I don't have contact info for this tenant anymore. He does owe me some rent money but not enough that it's worth tracking him down. You can't squeeze blood from a turnip....
How do I get this car off of my property?

Around here the city won't touch them but as the owner of the property you can call any tow truck company to come get it. They will have to store the auto for a certain period and then they can get rid of it for cash. You can also go through a similar process and take title to the vehicle to sell for cash if you want.
Depends on the state you are in. Find out the law about property let when a tennant moves out. Pay a real estate lawyer for an hours time. Once you find out, you will know what to do in the future.
In my state California, you must follow precise rules or you open yousefl up to all sorts of liability.

You could drag it to the street and and let city deal with it. I have seen this done in New York City.

I had one towed by a private tow company that was recommended by the sheriff's department. The city would have dealt with it except it was on my propery. In the future you might want to have wording in your lease that disallows non-operating vehicles on your property.
I had the car towed on Friday evening.
I got a call this moring from the old tenant. One of the other tenants called him to say I had it towed. He was demanding that I pay to get it back. When I told him he abandoned it on my property after he moved out he tried telling me that one of the other tenants had bought it from him and it wasn't his anymore. He did not know that the person he was saying bought it was standing next to me as the tow truck drove away.
Anyway - he threatend to sue me and I reminded him that he broke a window when he moved out and broke his lease when he left. If he wants to go to court I'll pay the $100 for the tow and he can pay for the months rent for 30 days notice and for the window he broke. . . .
I'm glad he and the junked cars are gone....
