2 Rehab Questions
I have 2 rehab questions:
1. Can I install the self-stick vinyl tiles on top of existing vinyl flooring, or should I put down a very thin new plywood subfloor? With the self-stick vinyl tiles, do they really stick and hold firm. Could I add additional tiling glue to the back of the self stick vinyl tiles to strengthen the
bond?
2. Does it pay to sheetrock a wall that has the older brown wood panels, or should I just paint the older brown wood panels?
I prefer to use roll vinyl which can be placed over the old vinyl. If you use the self adhesive tile it would be better to place it on luan over the old vinyl. When placing luan over the old vinyl you need to place nails every 5-6 inches. In my opinion it would be better to sheetrock over the paneling than paint the paneling.
question one: How many layers of vinyl? if one, you can level the floor with some kind of flooring compound and a trowel, and yes add additional glue to tiles.
this will not last as long as removing all the layers to subfloor and installing partical board or plywood first.
question two: Is this a run down rental or in good shape, if in good shape, do the job properly, remove to studs and rock, tape & texture
Regarding the self-stick tiles... One thing I have found that really improves their long-term "stickiness" is a latex sealer. I don't remember exactly what it's called, but I've bought it in a gallon jug and it looks kinda' milky when you put it on the floor. I roll it on with a paint roller, like painting the floor. Let it dry (takes an hour or 2) then put down your tiles. It keeps the adhesive from drying out like it seems to do when you put the tiles directly on the plywood. It only costs a couple of bucks and I've been extremely pleased with the results.
(I've never put the tiles over old tiles. I always ripped up the old floor and replaced the underlayment. So I don't know how well that works.)
